Yeah, I have no idea.  One does wonder if it is useful to go this far.

I was really only pointing to the gettext docs in order to show how
complex it gets, not so suggest we go there :-)

In general I want to maximise the numbers of strings which are to be
translated which are 'pure' strings, and minimise the numbers which have
parameters.  That's the heuristic I want to push for, and if there are
simple changes that can be done in that direction then fire me patches
for them, the smaller the better.
